Essex – State Police were outside the historic Griswold Inn on Main Street and at a nearby gas station on Monday evening investigating a stabbing incident.
It was not clear where the stabbing took place, but police and witnesses said the incident also involved a car crash and two people were taken to hospital.
Shortly after 10 p.m., officers donned yellow tape at the crime scene on Main Street as revelers continued to sing sea songs inside the historic inn.
Enoch Panzera, who was at the Griswold Inn, said he parked about 50 yards from the restaurant on Monday evening, and as he was about to leave his car, a large car drove past speed.
He said as he approached the entrance to the Griswold Inn, he saw two people on the street – a sobbing woman and a bleeding man.
Panzera’s companion, Marissa Nardone, said she was crossing the street towards the restaurant when a badly damaged car drove up the street from the riverside area. She said the car stopped in front of the hostel and a man came out with blood streaming down his face and fell to the ground.
When the incident happened, the evening’s performers, who had led people in sea songs, shut down the event to say that something had happened outside. The singing resumed soon after, according to people inside the bar.
Seven police cars were parked at the Sunoco gas station on Route 154 opposite the Essex Steam Train, with yellow crime scene warning tape blocking the entrance to the gas station.
State police confirmed that the two scenes were linked. They declined to provide further information, deferring their comments to a public information official.
