Seahawks coach Pete Carroll had some interesting things to say when speaking to the media today following Sunday’s collapse against the Titans. One of the reasons Seattle lost the two touchdown lead in the fourth quarter was a loss of discipline. Losing dozens of yards on penalties was a big factor, as were several mistakes during Derrick Henry’s outburst.
One of the players blamed on Twitter today is strong team safety Jamal Adams, who committed a costly penalty for the passer in overtime and is taking heat for going too deep on the touchdown run. 60 yards from King Henry. Carroll says Adams has to deal with his aggression with his missions.

While it’s true that Adams pushed the limits too far in this instance, that instinct isn’t the one the Seahawks want to extinguish. The best defenders who have come through Seattle have often drawn the line between aggressive and physical play and begging for flags. Think Michael Bennett’s penchant for jumping offside too early or the busy hands of Richard Sherman with the ball in the air.
Finding the balance Carroll seeks with Adams and other special athletes like him is more of an art than an exact science. It’s important to remember that this defense is a work in progress and Adams has only played a handful of healthy games in a Seahawks uniform. The franchise has made a huge investment in it and we have to believe that they will eventually figure it out. It will just take longer.
