Trump shoots new GOP candidate in Ohio over Cleveland nickname

The Cleveland MLB team, formerly known as the Indians, officially changed their name to Guardians in July, following nationwide unrest that erupted last year in response to the murder of George Floyd and other cases of police brutality and injustice against black Americans.

Trump at the time voiced opposition to the name change, arguing that “many Indians” would likely be upset by it.

His latest comments against the MLB team’s name came hours after Dolan embarked on the open race for the Ohio Senate, entering a crowded GOP field filled with Trump supporters.

Dolan, a centrist, suggested in a statement that the other contending candidates have not focused enough on the needs of Ohioans.

“After meeting with Republicans, conservative activists, and community leaders across Ohio in recent weeks, it’s clear that the focus of the U.S. Senate race has yet to be on our people, our interests and our Beloved state, ”he said. “That changes today with the announcement of my candidacy for the US Senate.”

Former State Treasurer Josh Mandel, author and venture capitalist JD Vance, former State GOP Chairman Jane Timken, businessman Bernie Moreno and investment banker Mike Gibbons are also in the running for the Republican nomination in the race to fill the retired senator. A number of them have shown strong allegiances to Trump and have strived to present themselves as reliable conservatives. They also fought publicly for the approval of the former president.
