A family of three, including an immunocompromised toddler, was told to leave a restaurant in Texas last week after refusing to remove their masks.
Natalie Wester and her husband decided to hang out with their four-month-old to Rowlett’s Hang Time, a Texas bar and restaurant with friends.
They were asked to take off their masks when they entered the bar. But they couldn’t clearly hear the instructions due to the loud music and dismissed them, Ms Wester said in a Facebook post.
Half an hour later, a waitress told them to take off their masks for “political reasons,” Ms Wester said. He was told: “Our manager sent me because I’m nicer than him. And yes, it is political.
“She [the waitress] then told me that masks are not allowed in their building and that they can make the rules because it is a private company, ”Ms. Wester added.
The family received the unscientific explanation that a mask does not work and that it is akin to “using a wire fence to keep mosquitoes away and not giving people enough oxygen.”
According to guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if a person is not fully vaccinated and is two years of age or older, they should wear a mask in indoor public places.
Ms Wester said her four-month-old is immunocompromised and will need to be hospitalized if he contracts the fatal viral infection. Parents choose to wear a mask every time they go out, “which is not too often,” she added.
The CDC says, “People who have an illness or who take drugs that weaken their immune system may not be fully protected even if they are fully vaccinated. They should keep taking it all precautions recommended for unvaccinated individuals, including wearing a properly fitted mask, until advised otherwise by their healthcare provider. “
“If you’ve been new parents before, spending those few hours outdoors once or twice a month is so important to your mental health,” Ms. Wester told local news channel CBS DFW.
The restaurant owner, who identified himself as Tom, defended the anti-mask policy and claimed it was part of the dress code. “I spent my money in the business, my blood sweat and my tears in this business, and I don’t want masks here,” he said, adding that those who want to wear masks are free. to refuse his service.
He claimed that “the overall reaction with the masks is ridiculous” in the United States at this time. He said he and his employees would continue to enforce the anti-mask rule and advise people entering his facility to ditch masks.
He added that he was not aware of Ms Wester’s son’s immunocompromised condition.
The incident came shortly after a fight broke out outside a New York City restaurant last week over vaccine evidence. Three black Texas women have been charged with assault after arguing with the restaurant hostess, who allegedly suggested their vaccination cards were fake. The women’s lawyers alleged that race was a factor in the dispute.
