Daniel Craig has said he doesn’t believe James Bond should be played by a woman.
The debate over the spy character’s portrayal and future recast has been going on for years, with some fans suggesting a woman could take on the iconic role.
However, the idea has also drawn a backlash from critics who say it would do the character a disservice, or that there are better ways to improve the portrayal on screen.
Talk to Radio schedulesCraig has now offered his own opinion, that “there should just be better roles for women and actors of color.”
He asked, “Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a role as good as James Bond but for a woman?”
Craig is the latest member of the Bond universe to speak out against a female starring role.
In a 2020 interview with Variety, franchise producer Barbara Broccoli said: “James Bond can be any color, but he’s a man.”
She explained that this was because she preferred to create new characters for women, rather than letting a woman play a role originally written as a man.
“I think we should create new characters for women – strong female characters,” she continued. “I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having it played by a female. I think women are much more interesting than that.
In 2017, Halle Berry also said Entertainment tonight that the “series is steeped in history … you know, the Ian Fleming stories.” I don’t think you can change Bond into a woman.

No time to die will see actor Lashana Lynch playing the first female 007.
However, talk to The Guardian Ahead of the film’s release earlier this month, Lynch denied speculation that she could take over from Bond in future installments, saying, “Noooo! You do not want me !
When asked who she thought it should be, Lynch replied, “We’re in a time when the industry doesn’t just give the public what they think the public wants. They actually give. to the public what they or they want to give to the public.
“With Bond, it could be a man or a woman. They could be white, black, Asian, mixed race. They could be young or old. At the end of the day, even if a two year old was playing Bond, everyone would come to the movies to see what this two year old boy is going to do, right?
Lynch’s comments came amid widespread speculation about who the next James Bond will be, with Tom Hardy, Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston among the frequently mentioned candidates.
No time to die will be released on September 30.
