Citizen of the World Live is almost here, and now two of the strongest voices on vaccine fairness are joining the one-in-a-generation event on Saturday, September 25: Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Prince Harry and Meghan will join the 24-hour global live streaming event from the Great Lawn in Central Park, New York, to continue their urgent work with world leaders in the pursuit of global vaccine equity for end the COVID-19 pandemic for everyone, everywhere.
The Citizen of the World Live The campaign calls on the G7 countries (the richest nations in the world) and the European Union to immediately share at least 1 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine with those who need it most and supports calls for a waiver the intellectual property rights of the COVID-19 vaccine. The campaign also calls on Pfizer, BioNTech and Moderna to share mRNA technology with the new transfer center supported by the World Health Organization and based in South Africa.
It certainly won’t be the first time the Duke and Duchess have spoken out on the issue of vaccine fairness. As Co-Chairs of Global Citizen’s VAX LIVE: The Concert to Reunite the World in May – which called on world leaders, businesses and philanthropists to ensure vaccines are available to all – they wrote an open letter to Big Pharma CEOs, calling on them to urgently share COVID-19 vaccines with the poorest countries in the world.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated health, social and economic inequalities globally,” they wrote. “The global vaccine roll-out so far further exacerbates these disparities, with the poorest and most marginalized populations most affected. ”
And to celebrate their son Archie’s second birthday, they led a global fundraiser to support Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which co-runs the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access (COVAX) Facility to provide vaccines to people in low-income countries that need it most. The initiative – thanks in part to matching donations from the Mastercard Impact Fund, the Seadream Family Foundation and a public charity – ultimately raised $ 3.5 million.
“The virus does not respect borders and access to the vaccine cannot be determined by geography,” Prince Harry said on the VAX LIVE to organise. “It must be accepted as a fundamental right for all and this is our starting point.”
Months later, vaccine equity remains a serious issue. Variants of the coronavirus are spreading across the world, people in poor countries still cannot access vaccines or treatments, and rich countries continue to rack up vaccines as they move forward with COVID-recall plans. 19 (despite the World Health Organization and other health experts saying plans at this point will only exacerbate vaccine inequity). The Duke and Duchess’s message is sure to be the one world leaders need to hear.
Other appearances announced Tuesday for the global broadcast event include United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Executive Director of the Food Program Global Director of Education David Beasley can’t wait for Yasmine Sherif, Namati CEO Vivek Maru. , Rotary President-elect Jennifer Jones, SDG Champion and Advocate Eddie Ndopu, Ford Foundation President Darren Walker, Paris Peace Forum Steering Committee Chair Trisha Shetty, Hip Hop CEO Caucus Rev. lawyer Eunice Akoth, and more.
