Several benchmark instances of the Intel Core i9-12900K Alder Lake Desktop processor have appeared in the Ashes of The Singularity repository. Even though AOTS is an old benchmark, the Core i9-12900K appears to be faster than current-gen Intel and AMD flagship chips.
Intel Core i9-12900K Alder Lake faster than AMD Ryzen 9 5950X in the ashes of the singularity benchmark
There were at least 21 entries that were spotted by Benchleaks and all have the Intel Core i9-12900K processor with 64 GB of memory. Since the benchmark is a bit old by today’s standards, it is unable to recognize the correct number of cores / threads for the Alder Lake processor which is 16 cores and 24 threads while the benchmark reports that ‘these are 24 physical cores and 24 logical cores.
The benchmark isn’t the best either when it comes to reporting specific clock speeds and all we know is that a GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card was used (not knowing if it was overclocked or not). The only metric that makes sense for comparison in the AOTS benchmark is CPU frame rate and that’s what we’re going to focus on. Even the processor frame rate should be compared in a benchmark run using the same parameters.
In the same High (1440p) preset, the Intel Core i9-12900K gets up to 146.6 FPS on average while the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X system with 64GB DDR4 memory and an RTX 3080 gets 104.6 FPS . The reason for using these two SKUs for comparison is that all SKU presets including the version match here.
Comparison between Intel Core i9-12900K vs AMD Ryzen 9 5950X (high preset 1440p):
That’s a 40% improvement in CPU performance over the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and it really shows that the Core i9-12900K could end up being a great chip for gaming, although we have to remember that the AOTS benchmark tends to offer slightly better performance on Intel processors. although its roots go back to the days of AMD Mantle, when it offered much better performance on AMD-based processors and GPUs. That has changed, so we can’t take this as an absolute measure of Alder Lake’s gaming performance. It’s best to wait for more detailed benchmarks that correctly display specs and presets.
