Dozens of Coastal Carolina University theater students have protested to attend classes and are calling for a teacher to be removed from the school for “race-insensitive” comments.
“The names of the non-white students were written on a board and classified according to their specific race,” theater student Kelis Herriot said of the incident at the university, explaining that the lack of context affected other students. when they saw the names on the board, according to WPDE.
“It made us feel isolated from the department,” Herriott added.

The situation unfolded after names appeared on a classroom board following a teacher who said she was working with two black students and discussed their frustrations.
“I was working with two black students after class was over and listening to their frustration and isolation,” said artist-in-residence Dr. Susan Finque. “One of the students got up and started writing names on the board. The stupid thing I did was we left this room and didn’t erase this board.”
Other students then entered the classroom and thought their peers were being taken to task.
An email chain was then formed about the incident, and the students took issue with another professor, Dr Robert Earnest from the drama department, and how he reacted to the situation.

“I don’t think that’s a big deal,” Earnest said in the emails, which were reviewed by ABC15. “I’m just sad that people get hurt so easily. And do they go to the theater?”
Students protested by attending class on Monday in response to the incident and demanded that he be fired.
“We are calling for his suspension and legal action against him for his removal from the institution,” Herriott said.
Earnest and Finque apologized, Earnest saying he “had no idea it was going to explode like this.”
“I just sent a letter of apology to the DCI committee. My comments were not directed to the BIPOC students. Obviously there was a problem with the student list that was published which caused caused some confusion, ”he said.
“I then made a callous comment asking them to move on. I had no idea it was going to explode like this.”
The school issued a statement saying that “the management of the university and the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts are aware of the complaints that some of our theater students have communicated. We are working to establish the most appropriate path for this. solve their problems. “
