Nick Gates’ season is officially over. The New York Giants placed Gates, team captain and starting offensive lineman, in IR on Tuesday after Gates sustained a broken left leg last Thursday against the Washington football team.
After 17 straight starts at center, Gates made his first career start at left guard Thursday in place of injured Shane Lemieux.
Head coach Joe Judge said on Monday he hopes that when his health permits, Gates will be around the squad.
“Nick is a key character for us, he really is. He’s a guy who the whole time we’re here, he’s been a team guy first, he’s been a full guy, he’s a guy who comes to work every day with a lot of people. energy and enthusiasm. We will always count on him to do so. As he improves and goes through his healing process, we want him to stay as involved with the team as possible, ”said Judge. “This guy was elected captain by his teammates for a reason and it’s for the leadership. This guy has done a lot of selfless things and I think he will continue to have an impact on the team.
The Giants did not immediately announce the replacement of Gates on the 53-man roster. They currently only have seven offensive linemen.
After losing practice team offensive tackle Jackson Barton to the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, the Gints announced four practice team protections for their Week 3 game against the Atlanta Falcons:
- WR CJ Consulting
- OT Korey Cunningham
- DT David Moa
- TE Chris Myarick
