Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford has always championed heavy metal’s place in pop culture. It is therefore not surprising that when the singer, known to his fans as the “God of Metal”, submitted his ballot for Rolling stones New ranking of the 500 greatest songs of all time, almost all of his Top 10 tracks were certified headbangers. Halford was one of more than 250 artists, journalists and industry figures to weigh in on the new list.
He recently caught up Rolling stone to break down his choices, singing the praises of Ozzy Osbourne, Ronnie James Dio and Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, among others. Many of his picks echo his picks for his top 10 favorite albums, which he sent to Rolling stone last year when we reclassified the 500 best albums of all time.
Regarding his number one song, “Paranoid” by Black Sabbath, Halford praised the pioneering spirit of the song. “For me, it was one of those game-changing moments that we have in music, because it brought about and gave birth to a genre and a style of music that illuminated the world,” he said. he declares. “‘Paranoid’ just took off like a heavy metal rocket.”
Some of Halford’s other favorite songs include “Angel of Death” by Slayer, “Holy Diver” by Dio, “Ride the Lightning” by Metallica and “Ace of Spades” by Motörhead. His only non-metallic selection was David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”. “I saw the Ziggy stardust [tour] in the UK, in Wolverhampton, and I’m so delighted to have the memory of seeing him come out on stage and do all the Ziggy stardust album, ”he says. “Of all the people we’ve talked about, Bowie as a musician … man, there’s no one like him.”
Halford and Judas Priest are currently touring the United States to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Next month they will be releasing a 42 CD box set, 50 years of heavy metal music, which includes 13 discs of unreleased material.
