If you’re in the market for a new laptop, the MacBook Pro line may be an attractive option, especially now that you have Apple’s awesome M1 chip. But if you’re tempted to pull out the checkbook and move for a MacBook Pro right now, I have just one word for you: don’t.
That’s because the MacBook Pro is on the verge of its most significant upgrade in half a decade. Buy one now and as soon as you get it in your hands you’ll get a serious case of buyer’s remorse when you see the new models unveiled at the October Apple event. Read on to find out what Apple is about to reveal – and why you need to be patient a little longer.
A major makeover of the MacBook
Apple tends to update its MacBook Pro line every year in October, so buying a new Apple laptop in September is usually a bad idea anyway. This year, however, it could be an even more costly mistake thanks to what we know is coming.
For months now, reliable reporters, analysts and prognosticators have been unanimous in saying one thing: This year’s MacBook Pro redesign is going to be significant. We’re not just talking about a quick CPU update. No, the 2021 MacBook Pro is ready for its most complete redesign since the 2016 redesign.
Remember when Apple updated the MacBook Pro 15 in 2019 to have thinner bezels and a larger 16-inch screen? We loved that extra screen space, and now the MacBook Pro 13 is set for the same extended upgrade, going from 13 inches to 14. But there’s more – besides making the screen more spacious, Apple Should step it up a notch with the same mini-LED technology found in the latest iPad Pro, which delivers superb color reproduction, contrast ratio, and dynamic range.
If you’ve ever used a MacBook Pro before the USB-C era, there’s a good chance you’ve sampled the original MagSafe. This magnetically attaches the power cable to your laptop so that it can snap free when pulled, preventing you from smashing your MacBook on the floor. According to internal sources, this year’s MacBook Pro will see this much-loved feature return, along with a wider variety of ports, including an SD card slot and an HDMI port alongside the usual Thunderbolt ports.
We can also count on a redesigned chassis with flatter edges borrowed from the design of the iPad Pro. And the Touch Bar, which has been dividing since its introduction in 2016, is also set to be dropped.
On top of all this, the rumor that the M1X chip will bring superior graphics to the MacBook Pro, competing with the discrete AMD Radeon graphics offered in the current 16-inch MacBook Pro.
In other words, it’s a MacBook Pro update to eclipse those of the past few years. If you need a new Apple laptop and are looking to buy, you won’t want to miss out on buying too early. Wait until the Apple event in October and you’ll get a lot more MacBook Pro for your money than the current model.
A price hike is coming
There is, however, an exception to this rule. There is currently a strong rumor that Apple will increase the price of its new MacBook Pro models as it has to cover the cost of the new design and new features. This breaks with the model of recent years, where Apple would keep the same price despite upgrading components of the device.
If you’re looking to get a good deal on a MacBook Pro and aren’t too concerned about the redesigned chassis and added port variance, then waiting for the new models won’t do you any favors. In that case, it would be possible to pull the trigger and get a MacBook Pro now before the new models release.
If it was me ? I would still be tempted to wait. I don’t expect the price increase to be astronomical, maybe $ 100 or so for each model. When you pay more than $ 1,000 for a MacBook Pro (or $ 2,399 for the 16-inch model), that kind of price difference is negligible.
Still, it’s worth keeping in mind if you want to save some money and can do without the new features. For everyone, however, the choice is clear: just wait a little longer and you’ll be glad you did.
