Lil Nas X celebrated the release of his debut album Montero reimagining Dolly Parton’s signature song “Jolene” in a recent performance for the BBC Radio One Live Lounge. Singing in a deep baritone over a sparse rock arrangement, Lil Nas X delivered an intense and genre-changing interpretation of the 1973 Parton hit about a woman with “flaming locks of auburn hair” who can rob men with ease.

It has been clear for some time that the two artists are mutual fans. After Lil Nas X openly requested Parton’s participation in a remix of “Old Town Road” in the summer of 2019, the country legend said She that she was considering a future collaboration with the rapper raised in Atlanta.

“I had the opportunity to be part of this [song]”Parton said. “But it had worked so well with so many people. I thought, ‘Well, I’m going to wait and do something later. No need to go down this same road from the old town. We have other roads to travel.

Critics and writers have compared the two artists in recent years. “Combined with Nas X’s full adherence to the camp and to the gay and queer cultures that have elevated the camp to political art, Lil Nas X is shifting Dolly’s ambitions from subversive to the realm of revolutionary,” wrote the professor and writer Tressie McMillan Cottom earlier in 2021.

Lil Nas X is out Montero This past Friday, and the project includes Jack Harlow’s single “Industry Baby” as well as guest appearances from Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat and Miley Cyrus.
