Are you playing Genshin Impact and not sure how to get the characters you want? Well you’ve come to the right place. This guide explains Gacha systems, pity, banners, currencies, etc.
The Gacha system explained
Genshin Impact is a Gacha game that uses RNG. You may have seen this term used by the community and it means “random number generator”. An RNG is an algorithm that, well… generates random numbers. And these numbers are used to dictate the results of certain events. Simply put, it is luck and it plays a big role in Gacha systems.
Many would argue that the Gacha system is the controversial part of Genshin Impact. This is often what keeps some players away from the game, and for others, it may be what attracts them. So what is it?
The Gacha system is similar to loot boxes found in other games. Players spend money to roll over a banner in the hopes of getting the character or item they want. This is where the problem lies for some people, as not continuously getting what they want can become frustrating and costly.
Gacha games are known to have very low rates for their 5 star characters and weapons. Genshin Impact, in particular, has a 0.6% rate for its 5-star items and a 5.1% rate for its 4-star items. But in an attempt to address player concerns about never getting lucky, Genshin Impact includes a pity system.
The pity system in Genshin Impact
The Pity system exists to stifle the uncertainty of the Gacha system a bit. Basically, after a certain number of throws, players are guaranteed to get an item of high rarity. In Genshin Impact, this item is a 4 or 5 star character or weapon. The pity system in Genshin Impact works a bit like this:
- Limited Character Banner: Roll 10 times for guaranteed 4 stars and 90 times for guaranteed 5 stars.
- Standard banner: Roll 10 times for guaranteed 4 stars and 90 times for guaranteed 5 stars.
- Weapon Banner: Roll 10 times for guaranteed 4 stars and 80 times for guaranteed 5 stars.
The above refers to the mercy or number of rolls it takes to get a guaranteed 4 or 5 star character / weapon. There is another type of pity called gentle pity that begins around the 75th scroll. This is where the chances of getting a 5 star character / weapon start to increase.
Pity continues from banner to banner. So if you roll 75 times before a new banner drops, those reels will stand. Note that this only works if you are riding on the same banner. Character and Standard banners do not share the same mercy. They work separately, and this also applies to the Weapon banner.
Now that all of that is sorted out, you might be wondering what the different types of banners are. Well, that’s the next topic we get to.
Types of banners in Genshin Impact
Banners are the categories on which you use your currencies. The content of each banner differs slightly, but this difference is key to making sure you get the characters you want. The first banner we’re going to talk about is the standard banner.
Standard banner
The standard banner is also known as the permanent banner. This is because the weapons and characters in it don’t change very often.
The standard Genshin Impact banner contains these characters and weapons:
- All 4 star characters
This banner also contains 4 star weapons as well as 5 star weapons. It is generally not advisable to spend all your rolls on this banner as it is the most random of all.
Limited character banner
Now we are talking about the good stuff. This banner is where most people ride because it contains a limited character as well as a “rate increase” for that character and other 4-star characters. A rate increase means that you have a much higher chance of getting that character than those without a rate increase.
The limited character banner usually contains:
- Limited 5-star character with rate increase
- 4-star characters with rising rates
- Standard Banner 5-Star Characters with No Rate Increase
- 4-star characters (except Lisa, Kaeya, and Amber) from the standard banner with no rate increase
- Various 5-star weapons
- 4 Star Weapons Without Rate Increase
The limited character banner also has a mechanic called 50/50, where if you don’t get the limited character as the first 5-star, the next 5-star you get is sure to be the limited 5-star character. Note that this only works in this banner.
Weapon banner
If you need some good weapons in Genshin Impact, this banner is the one you’ll want to try. It usually has two 5-star weapons and a few 4-star weapons with a rate increase.
The weapon banner contains:
- Two 5-star weapons with rate increase
- Some 4-star weapons with a rate increase
- Various 5-star weapons with no rate increase
- Various 4-star weapons with no rate increase
If you want to know the specifics of each banner and what it currently offers, click on the details button below in the game to see what weapons / characters you can get and the percentage.
Genshin impact currencies
There are many currencies available in Genshin Impact to use for banners. There are Primogems, Fates, and Genesis Crystals. First of all, let’s talk about the Primogems because they are the most important of all.
Primogems
Primogems are the most basic but most important currency in Genshin Impact. You can convert Primogems into Fates and use them to get the banner you like. However, this currency is experiencing a drought, so make sure you don’t waste them. You can earn Primogems in Genshin Impact naturally through Quests, Events, Daily Commissions, and the Spiral Abyss. There is also a monthly subscription called Blessing of the Welkin Moon where you can earn a fixed amount of Primogems per day for 30 days, but it costs $ 4.99 USD.
Fates
There are two types of destinies in Genshin Impact – intertwined destinies and familiar destinies – and each destiny has a specific banner where you can use it. Intertwined Fates are used in Limited Character Banners and Weapon Banners. Meanwhile, Acquaint Fates is used in standard banners.
To get Fates in Genshin Impact, you need to convert your Primogems and / or visit the Paimon Bargains under the Shops tab. Paimon Bargains offer fates for minor currencies called Masterless Starglitter and Masterless Stardust which you can earn by throwing any banner.
Crystals of Genesis
Genesis Crystals cost real money in Genshin Impact. They can also be converted with a 1: 1 value to Primogems but not the other way around. This means that once you have converted your Genesis Crystals to Primogems, you cannot convert them back. You can also use Genesis Crystals to purchase outfits for the characters.
How to get free characters in Genshin Impact

Put it all together and you are ready to have a good time in Genshin Impact!
