Samuel Harness (Team legend), “Here without you” – Grade: A- | One of five adopted siblings, the 26-year-old charmer took the opportunity by slowing Three Doors Down and singing with a pain and intensity that reminded of Season 20’s Corey Ward, but a searing grater that was all his own. own. Blake even said it was less of a grater than a “sizzle, like a fried egg.” For her part, Ari marveled that the three-chair lathe managed to cross out the high notes in a way that sounded “grunge but not unhealthy.”
Carolina Alonso (Kelly Team), “El Triste” – Grade: A | A biochemistry graduate whose parents moved their family to Reno from Mexico to escape violence in their homeland, Carolina delivered such a massive performance that she could have knocked down the studio walls. I couldn’t believe it took Kelly even a nanosecond to shoot for her, because it wasn’t just a Spanish song, which the coach adores, it was sung with a passion and a power that left me dizzy. Chavon Rogers (Team Ariana), “driving license” – Grade: C | I have to give this 23-year-old, mop-capped, credit for creatively deflecting Olivia Rodrigo’s smash onto an alternative-rock path. If only the trick of two chairs had been able to pull the pieces of his mumbling arrangement together into a cohesive whole. Was anyone else surprised that Ari – aka the most technical trainer – swiveled his chair as Chavon choked a high note?
Joshua Vacanti (Team Legend), “Into the Unknown” – Grade: A | The 28-year-old Frozen 2 cover was so fiery and gigantic it looked like a Nor’easter: It. Would have. Not. To be. Refuse. John was even so impressed that he used his one and only Block on Ari, which was all about picking Joshua’s “crazy” songs. He has a huge voice, that’s for sure. The question is, to what extent is it adaptable to numbers that are not quite so theatrical musical?
Hailey Green (Team Blake), “Home” – Rating: A + | Back after a failed season 19 audition, the 15-year-old took the stage spitting gravel. A total badass, she demonstrated that she had come light years since her first try, making that moment less of a “Please like me” moment than a “It’s me, take me or leave me “. The one-chair ride gave a wild and untamed performance, raw and authentic. I probably would have given it an A for the growl alone, I was so completely sold.
Jim and Sasha Allen (Team Ariana), “Going in a Jet” – Grade: B | After an intro package in which Sasha shared that he was transgender, he and his father delivered a perfectly charming take on the John Denver classic. It didn’t give me chills like Girl Named Tom on Monday Night, but it was gorgeous – as Ari noted, harmonious and as perfect as it gets. Too bad none of the chairs they turned belonged to Blake, for whom they had hoped so much, Sasha had sketched all three of them together.
Paris Winningham (Team Legend), “Superstition” – Rating: B + | The 32-year-old Floridian who traveled the world in the Navy started his cover of Stevie Wonder well but not exceptional, serving up a voice as rich and thick as a Ho Ho.
