Metallica rocked the Chicago subway on Monday with a set featuring “Seek & Destroy” and “Master of Puppets.” Their intimate performance follows their surprise concert at The Independent in San Francisco last Thursday, where they delivered a 16 song set.
“It was way too much fun last week as we finally performed in front of real fans live for the first time in over two years in our hometown of San Francisco,” Metallica wrote. “So why not start over?” This time we are in Chicago and we will take to the legendary Clark Street subway stage tonight… our first time since 1983 !! ”
At Metro, the band performed an extensive roster of classics and hits, including “Ride the Lightening”, “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “Master of Puppets”. The musicians closed the 16-song ensemble with a callback of “Hardwired”, “Fuel” and beloved 1982 favorite “Seek & Destroy”.
The last time they performed at the Metro, in the summer of 1983, was on their Kill ‘Em All for One tour, when half of Metallica was not even of legal drinking age. It was also their first time playing in Chicago, according to Lars Ulrich’s introduction to the video footage they shared from the night during a Metallica Mondays segment last year.
Monday a queue on site with 1,100 places meandered for blocks after the club officially announced the show just hours before the doors opened at 7 p.m. Less than 90 minutes after tickets went on sale, it was full.
Metro requires full proof of Covid-19 vaccination to enter the site, and those who purchased tickets for Metallica had to show this proof in order to purchase their unique ticket per individual, as published by Metallica.
