Android Auto and the various applications available are designed with security and fast interactions in mind. This involves placing the controls close to the driver, but that is not always the case in some parts of the world. To remedy this, Google Maps in Android Auto can now adapt its user interface to right-hand drive vehicles.
Right-hand traffic with left-hand drive (steering wheel) is used in most of the world. As such, Google Maps in Android Auto has always placed key controls on the left side of the touchscreen.
To accommodate the opposite traffic / driving pattern, Google Maps will now place the navigation bar and turn the information maps to the right side of the screens, where applicable:
Users around the world using Android Auto in their vehicles will now see the user interface orient itself optimally, in terms of layout and language, depending on whether you are driving a left-hand or right-hand drive vehicle. No more worrying about the difficulty of using hard-to-reach buttons.
This is intended to deal with buttons that are too far away for the driver to reach. This optimization is applied automatically depending on the vehicle, but Google will soon add manual tuning to revert to the more familiar orientation.
Google says it has “also fixed some issues associated with right-to-left languages for Google Maps in Android Auto, so please take another look.”
In terms of wider availability:
This feature will be available to all users around the world using the latest version of Android Auto.
