Jimmy Garoppolo has been on both sides of the quarterback medal. The San Francisco 49ers signalman was the hottest novelty early in his career when he was potentially drafted to replace Tom Brady. Now he’s upside down, as the man is set to be replaced by a dynamic rookie, Trey Lance, eventually.
Few QBs have been in both situations. One man is Garoppolo’s opponent on Sunday night: Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers went through what Garoppolo is in the middle when the Packers traded to select Jordan Love. With Rodgers winning the MVP in 2020, the situation led to a troubled offseason in Green Bay.
Could Garoppolo follow Rodgers’ path, playing so well that the Niners adjust their schedule?
When stopping by the Rich iron show On Tuesday, Jimmy G was asked if he would follow Rodgers’ lead if given the chance.
“I don’t know,” Garoppolo replied, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “To be completely honest I haven’t thought that far yet. It’s one of those things that I’m still linked to the season and everything that happens. Aaron did last year, I’d love to do that. This guy – I mean, MVP speaks for himself. The dude has had one hell of a year, though. If I could replicate something similar, I’d love to. .
“But, you know, after this year, we’ll figure that out when we get there. We’ve got a long way to go. We’re only a few weeks away.”
Garoppolo’s financial situation is obviously different from Rodgers this season. Jimmy G still has a year on his contract, which is expected to earn $ 24.2 million in base salary, but none of that is guaranteed. The lack of guarantees led most to believe the Niners would be leaving QB this year after drafting Lance or at least trying to lower his salary. Neither has happened.
In two weeks, Garoppolo also fails to reach Rodgers’ heights on the pitch. The QB threw for 503 yards and two touchdowns, completing 70.9% of his passes in two games as the Niners’ offense got off to a mixed start.
Sunday’s game against the Packers gives Garoppolo a chance to shine in the spotlight against a defense that has struggled to slow down opponents so far this season.
The Niners QB could also have the chance to pick Rodgers’ brains at some point before or after the tilt.
“Yeah, there’s a good possibility,” Garoppolo said of contacting Rodgers. “I know Aaron pretty well. We’ve talked a few times on the pitch, off the pitch. Whatever little advice he could give me.… Obviously it worked out pretty well for him. been ballin ‘. He had four TDs [last] night.
“This league is a crazy thing. We all have our own history and just need to make the most of your situation.”
