On Monday, Kyle Shanahan told us if he has a plan to deploy Trey Lance. On Tuesday, Jimmy Garoppolo apparently contradicted this point on the Rich Eisen Show.
Here’s a question and answer from Monday’s conference call with Kyle Shanahan:
“Did the plan not to use QB Trey Lance against the Eagles or the way the game went prevented you from inserting it for a few games?”
No, I never have a plan that says ‘Hey I’m going to use it or I’m not going to use it.’ It’s always an option throughout the game. It’s been two games and I’ve never had it in the first few games and I’ve never had it as my designated time. I plan to do this week after week and whenever I feel like putting it on. You saw when I did this in week 1 and never had that urge in week 2. “
Tuesday Jimmy Garoppolo appeared on the Rich Eisen Show and says the opposite (emphasis mine):
“Do you know before a game when you might leave the field for Trey Lance?” Is that something you warn about before a game, or what? How it works?
Uh, sort of. You kind of know what the situation is. The first game, we went into the red zone, and then they brought in Trey. But this match we had planned for him to come and it didn’t turn out that way. It’s kind of one of those things, you’ve got to be ready to roll and if he’s calling Trey over there, he’s calling Trey over there. It is what it is, but you can’t think about it too much I would say.
This seems to be another classic example of an NFL head coach not telling the truth because he thinks it gives him a competitive edge. Sadly, this also seems to be another classic example of Kyle Shanahan saying things that don’t correspond to reality.
Lest you think I’m just parsing words, think about what Shanahan himself said on Sunday. Halfway through the game against the Eagles, Fox’s Shannon Spake asked Kyle if we would see Trey Lance in the second half. Shanahan replied, “I don’t think so.”
If Kyle never planned on when he’ll use Trey Lance, how did he know at halftime that he probably wouldn’t use it for the rest of the day? Why did Jimmy Garoppolo think even before the game started that they were planning to use Lance?
The most important point here is that the team’s message on this whole situation stank from the start. It started with Shanahan sending mixed signals this summer and has clearly continued now that the regular season games have started.
From the second you decide to keep Jimmy Garoppolo on the roster, the team should have had a meeting on what the post was going to be regarding the situation. Right now, it certainly doesn’t seem like everyone is on the same page when it comes to the franchise’s future quarterback.
