Robbie Lawler reacts to Nick Diaz asking for fight to be moved to middleweight: “I’m ready to fight”

Robbie Lawler may be one of the fiercest fighters in the history of the sport inside the cage, but it will take a lot to shake him on the outside.

The latest example of Lawler’s calm, cool and collected approach came on Wednesday after Nick Diaz demanded that their fight at UFC 266 be changed from welterweight to middleweight. While there were no details regarding the request, Diaz was likely struggling to come down to 170 pounds for the fight and his team preemptively requested the change rather than attempting a potentially dangerous welterweight cut.

As usual, Lawler just rolled with the punches when it comes to the weight class change and nothing is going to change much for him until Saturday night.

“I mean I’m good to go,” Lawler said on UFC 266 media day. “That’s all that matters. Camp went well and I got things under control. that I can control.

After landing in Las Vegas late Tuesday night, Lawler spoke to UFC President Dana White about Diaz’s camp request. While it’s possible that Diaz had to give up part of his purse or maybe Lawler just got a raise to get to 185 pounds, the former welterweight champion left it all to his manager while remaining focused on the fight.

“Yeah, we had a short conversation,” Lawler said of his conversation with White. “It is like that. I am ready to fight. We are moving forward.

“I left Dave [Martin] do that stuff. He consults me and understands. I don’t go into the details of this stuff. I know it’s an interesting part of the sport, but I don’t really discuss these things.

It would be understandable for Lawler to be upset with the change in weight, especially since he had been on a diet and prepared his body to compete in welterweight rather than middleweight.

Yet Lawler refuses to allow himself to waste energy complaining about Diaz or the change in their fight because they still have to fight on Saturday night and to him, that’s all that really matters.

“I’m just trying to stay calm,” Lawler said. “It doesn’t make sense to get upset and excited about what happened, it’s rubbish. Just stay relaxed. Camp went well, so that’s pretty much what it comes down to. I fall back on the work I have done. The job I did went very well. My training partner, Jason Jackson, got me ready and ready to go. I am lively at the moment. I’m fucking strong. My coaches did a great job. That’s what I fall for and why I don’t worry too much about it. Life is Beautiful.

“[Nick Diaz] comes to fight. It goes through everything it goes through. This is what it is sort of thing. You just have to show up and fight and that’s kind of the approach I take. Anything.

Despite his submissive demeanor, Lawler will certainly seek to take Diaz’s lead in the fight, especially as he seeks revenge for the loss he suffered when they first met over 17 years ago.

Other than that, Lawler has no ill will towards Diaz for the difficulties he faces that have forced him to request the weight class change.

“No, it doesn’t matter,” Lawler said bluntly. “That’s kind of where we’re going now and that’s what it is. I feel good. It’s all that matters. I am ready to fight.
