The shooting occurred in the 5000 block of Bennington, across from Kashmere High School, around 1:35 p.m.

A teenager, who police say is not a student, has been shot several times and is in an area hospital.

Houston Police told a news conference that two teenagers were shooting at each other over an apparent rivalry between them. Police said it was not a random shootout.

The 16-year-old victim who was rushed to Texas Children’s Hospital was shot three times in the abdomen, one in the arm and one in the thigh. He is in critical but stable condition and is in surgery at the time of this writing.

Police said a small caliber weapon may have been used in the shooting.

The suspect, who police said they knew, was seen limping away from the scene.

The victim who ended up in hospital was taken to Kashmere High School by four of his friends who were able to identify the other shooter.

No weapons were recovered.

The other suspicious victim left in a red sedan, police said. Both shooters were 16 or 17 years old. The adolescent transported to the hospital is not a pupil of the school. However, the other suspect is a student at Kashmere High School.

When asked about the motive, Patricia Cantu of HPD mentioned rivalry, bullying and possible gang activity. “Right now, we are working on this,” she said. “Major Assaults is about to investigate.”

Authorities will search for the other teenager in hospitals, and if he is not there, authorities will come to his home.
