Mother and daughter accused of “outlaw” buttock augmentation

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A mother and daughter have been arrested in Southern California on suspicion of performing “outlaw” buttock augmentation procedures on women, one of whom has died, has the police announced on Wednesday.

Libby Adame, 51, and Alicia Galaz, 23, are accused of performing “inherently unsafe and non-FDA approved” cosmetic procedures in non-medical facilities, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement .

“Neither is a licensed medical provider in California and their clients were recruited via Instagram,” the statement said.

The women were arrested last month in the town of Riverside. It was not immediately clear what charges they might face or if they had attorneys who could speak on their behalf.

An arrest warrant was issued after the death of a woman who suffered an “outlawed buttock augmentation” in a hospital emergency room in October 2019, police said. The defendants fled the scene without informing authorities or paramedics that the victim had undergone medical intervention, investigators said.

“This cosmetic procedure consisted of injecting an uncontained liquid silicone substance directly into the buttocks to make the buttocks appear fuller,” the police statement said. “The consequence of injecting silicone that is not contained in the body is that it can enter the bloodstream and create embolisms that can lead to serious illness or death. “

Police are looking for other women who have received the treatment.
