Ultimate Fighting (UFC) President Dana White signed Nick Diaz against Robbie Lawler as a welterweight contest; however, he expects good things from a move to middleweight at UFC 266.
Diaz vs. Lawler serves as a marquee fight on UFC 266’s Pay-Per-View Main Card (PPV): “Volkanovski vs. Ortega,” which takes place3 this weekend (Saturday, September 25, 2021) inside T – Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, streaming online via ESPN +. It was reported Tuesday that Diaz vs. Lawler had gone from welterweight to middleweight – just four days from fight night. The request was made by Diaz’s camp and, according to White, Lawler quietly agreed.
“That’s good. Robbie Lawler arrived last night. He obviously wasn’t happy, but Robbie is a player,” White told the Jim Rome Show Wednesday. “Robbie is a fighter. He is going to do it. These guys are going to fight Saturday night at 185 pounds.
“It makes for a better fight, to be honest with you,” he continued. “17 years ago this fight took place. These guys are much older and weighing up to 170 pounds is asking a lot of you. These guys are going to arrive fresh. None of them will have to cut.
Lawler reiterated White’s comments.
“I mean I’m good to go,” Lawler said on media day at UFC 266 (h / t MMA Fighting). “That’s all that matters. Camp went well and I controlled the things that I can control.
“We had a short conversation,” Lawler said of his conversation with White. “It is like that. I am ready to fight. We are moving forward.
