Dead woman found in freezer was former homicide detective

The body of a retired detective was found in a freezer in the garage of her Southern California home, authorities said.

Miriam E. Travis, 87, who worked for the Los Angels County Sheriff’s Department, was found dead Sunday after a relative requested a welfare check from her Riverside home, the Riverside Press reported -Enterprise.

“Our hearts are broken by this news and the whole LASD family mourns their loss,” said Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

Riverside Police Department said officers who attended the house encountered a foul odor and hoard-like conditions before discovering the body in a working freezer in the garage.

The cause of death has not yet been determined, but an autopsy has been scheduled.

Officer Javier Cabrera said Travis’s daughter had lived with her and made inconsistent statements to authorities about her mother’s fate, the newspaper reported.

No arrests have been made in connection with the death.

Travis retired as a Detective Sergeant with LASD in 1990 after 27 years with the department, including 11 with the Homicide Bureau.
