About five months ago you might remember there was a bit of noise around the PlayStation 4’s internal CMOS battery and how should it die alongside Sony finally pulling it off. PS Shop support on the console, the system would effectively be rendered useless. The small component in question is used to check the date and time. Trophies are unlocked on PS4 to prevent cheating, but although the battery is easily replaced, not being able to connect to PSN after installing a new one would mean you cannot access it. your games more – physical or digital. This is because PS4 titles need to connect to the network at least once before they can run.
This created a bit of concern among the die-hard PlayStation community, with some worrying about what would happen to current PS4 titles if PSN support was removed and the CMOS battery in question died on it. Well the good news is that this issue is no longer a problem at all as Sony fixed the issue with the recent 9.00 firmware update.
YouTuber Modern Vintage Gamer investigated the allegations after community members posted tweets and released the video embedded above. MVG removed the CMOS battery from a basic PS4 and downloaded firmware update 9.00, then disconnected the system from the internet after the installation was successful. Whereas before a game immediately displayed error CE-30391-6 and refused to run PS4 titles, the console now successfully starts the game and allows playing. It should be noted that a PS4 trophy won was not displayed, however.
Just to check, MVG then inserted a PS4 disc and downloaded and installed Shadow of the Colossus from scratch with the CMOS battery removed and the console disconnected from the PSN. It has always worked, which means the problem has been resolved in its entirety. “We have 100% confirmed that it works,” MVG concludes.
