Will.i.am sees big things for the show “Alter Ego”.
FOX’s new singing competition show features contestants performing backstage while wearing specialist costumes that capture their every move. On stage, an avatar created by the performer that the audience will see imitate each movement of the competitors.
The specialized technology will certainly make the show stand out from other song contest programs, but Will.i.am, one of the show’s judges, believes it could have even bigger impacts.
“People are used to filters and technology when it comes to social media, but no one has a whole body where they can totally transform their presence,” he told Fox News. “I think it’s going to transform the making of movies, the reality shows and change the entertainment, this show.”

Nick Lachey is also on the jury, who likened the show to his own turn on “The Masked Singer,” which saw him play music on stage while dressed as a little pig.
“Well, it’s definitely liberating in a way of taking an alter ego,” he explained. “For me it was Piglet, and I definitely approached the performance from a different angle than Nick Lachey or 98 degrees.”
Alanis Morissette, another judge, agreed that losing skin can be cathartic for artists.

“Some people really want to be the alter ego, throw out who they are and be this other futuristic character,” she said.
While the performers are hidden in their special costumes, the audience will see them perform as colorful avatars with lavish and exaggerated outfits. The idea of the show is to allow contestants to play someone else – to perform more than themselves.
‘Alter Ego’ will see contestants playing the role of colorful avatars, such as contestant Kobe Vang, who will play the role of Kai.
“The artists we love are more than just singers, they’re amplified characters, from Michael Jackson to Stevie Wonder to Prince to Cher to Tina Turner to Rihanna, Beyonce, they’re ultra,” said Will.i. am. “… They are ultra personalities.”
Grimes, the show’s final judge, noted that the wacky show suited candidates bursting with personality.

“The more personality you have, the better it works,” she explained. “Those who try to be overly groomed are less good than those who maybe even like to act a little weird.”
“Alter Ego” will debut on FOX Wednesday at 9/8 p.m.
