The Fugees reunite in New York: watch

You’re never going to believe it, but a gig that involved both Ms Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean didn’t start on time. Earlier this week, the Fugees, a group that hadn’t released an album for 25 years and hadn’t performed live for 15 years, announced a world reunion tour. The tour was to begin with a New York performance at an unannounced location. Last night the New York show took place, but there were foreseeable problems.

Last night’s Fugees reunion took place on Manhattan’s rooftop, Pier 17, in front of about 3,000 people. Spectators were to keep their phones in Yondr pouches. However, a few videos from last night have made its way onto the Internet. These videos aren’t of great quality, but Ms. Lauryn Hill’s voice sounds great. The doors to the hall were opened at 6 p.m., with the Fugees scheduled to take the stage an hour later. The band finally arrived on stage around 10 a.m. – a delay that couldn’t have come as a shock to anyone in the audience. (At least part of that delay would be due to soundcheck complications; apparently the backing band in the band was huge.)

Rolling stone reports that the show lasted around 45 minutes, and according to Setlist.FM, all of the songs the band performed were from The score. (The Fugees tour is meant, at least in part, as a celebration of this album’s 25th anniversary.) Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel also did some live freestyle, and Wyclef pleaded for Joe Biden to stop preventing the Haitian asylum seekers to be admitted to the United States. Ms. Lauryn Hill told the crowd about the history of the group in mythical terms: “There was a destiny in us that we came together, there was a destiny in the tour, and there was a destiny in the people that we. have inspired… Respect the miracle of this union. Respect the fact that we can get on this stage and continue to do so. ”

Below, check out some videos from last night’s show, as well as the setlist. Portions of the show will air as part of Global Citizen Live on Saturday.
