Ukraine plans to withdraw from Eurovision 2019, will consult the EBU

After a few dramatic days after the final of the Ukrainian Vidbir selection, it now seems that UA: PBC is consider withdrawing from the Eurovision Song Contest in 2019. The broadcaster must consult the EBU and the lawyers regarding the withdrawal.

A new priority for UA: PBC?

This revelation follows today's news that MARUV did not sign the agreement proposed by UA: PBC to be allowed to represent Ukraine in Tel Aviv. Early statements suggested that discussions with "the next candidate" would start on Tuesday morning. However, it now seems that the priority of the Ukrainian broadcaster is to withdraw.

Oleksandra Koltsova, member of the AU: PBC Board of Directors, has issued the following statements as reported by ESCKAZ.com:

First of all, we will consult the European Broadcasting Union on the politicization of the selection process in Ukraine. How does this affect our participation this year? Then we will speak with lawyers if we want to continue to participate as a broadcaster. Then we will talk to the direction of the artists. And then we will make a decision.

In addition, she stated that the only new element of the "winner's contract" this year was the ban on performances in Russia prior to the competition.

The artist has published his own interpretation of these conditions … but most are just a reference those of the rules of the Eurovision Song Contest. In addition, there was a tour cancellation clause in the Russian Federation – for the duration of preparations and participation in the competition.

In each selection, there were artists who performed at that time in the Russian Federation, none of them was finalist. We have not applied this clause. There was always a contract, we added this clause after the first semi final, when there was real chance that we would have such a case, and it will be necessary to interpret this for both our society and externally.

No voluntary replacement?

Rumors circulating on social media tonight indicate that many of the other acts of the Vidbir National Finale would deny any approach to the AU.: PBC to take the place of MARUV in Tel Aviv. Nevertheless, the report of ESCKAZ explains that if there was to be a Ukrainian entry into the Eurovision 2019, it would be from the national selection list.
