Ohio State linebacker K’Vaughan Pope was escorted to the locker room in the second quarter of Saturday’s Buckeyes game against visiting Akron after an explosion on the sidelines.

Pope, according to LetterMen Row, tried to enter the game in the second quarter but was ruled out by Buckeyes linebacker Teradja Mitchell. Once back on the sidelines, Pope headed for the locker room before being sidelined by an Ohio State staff member.

According to the report, Pope then threw his gloves into the stands and attempted to remove his jersey on the sidelines. A few Ohio state coaches had conversations with him before he was then escorted by a staff member into the locker room.

When asked if Pope was still on the squad after the Buckeyes’ 59-7 win, Ohio State coach Ryan Day was not determined to answer.

“I just left the field,” Day said. “So I’m going to have to find out exactly where this is all at now.”

In a tweet since deleted, Pope wrote “f — Ohio State” while the game was still going on. He also has tweeted “good luck to my teammates” and left this tweet on his newsfeed.

Day said he was made aware of the tweets after the contest, but wanted to take a closer look at them before commenting.

Pope, a senior, has played 33 games but hasn’t seen any significant playing time throughout his career. He has three tackles this season and hasn’t played a major role in the defensive unit. If Pope is no longer on the squad, he will be the second linebacker to leave the program last week. Dallas Gant entered the transfer portal on Wednesday, having seen minimal playing time this season.

It is not yet known whether Pope has left the program, but the Buckeyes have seen six players, including Gant, transfer since the end of last season. Offensive lineman Max Wray transferred to Colorado; wide receivers Jameson Williams and Mookie Cooper traveled to Alabama and Missouri, respectively; cornerback Tyreke Johnson transferred to Nebraska; and lineman Ryan Jacoby left for Pittsburgh.
