Abbott says Texas vote audits aren’t just about Trump

Critics have argued that the continued pressure to reconsider the 2020 election results in various states is undermining confidence in the U.S. election, undermining the Democratic process, and wasting taxpayer dollars. Focused on his return to the White House, Trump has made it clear that he believes the election was stolen, despite mountains of evidence to the contrary. States have upheld the results they certified, and courts have dismissed virtually all of the lawsuits brought by Trump and his supporters.

The Texas Secretary of State announced Thursday that his office is reviewing results in the counties of Dallas, Collin (which includes part of the city of Dallas), Harris (where Houston is located) and Tarrant (where Fort Worth is located) ) only hours after the publication of a letter from Trump to Abbott calling for an audit in Texas. Trump said: “Let’s get to the bottom of the 2020 presidential scam!”

Abbott said on Sunday that the timing of Trump’s letter had nothing to do with the decision to conduct audits.

“They actually started months ago because the Texas Secretary of State has an obligation to make sure we do audits in the state of Texas,” Abbott told host Chris Wallace .

Trump won Texas by over 600,000 votes.
