A new multiplayer game set in the Marvel Universe is rumored to be in development for PlayStation 5. While details of this supposed project are quite scarce, it would represent another Marvel Games collaboration with Sony. Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Wolverine, both of which are currently in the works at Insomniac Games. And while it’s unclear at this time whether this new Marvel title will be real or not, the idea on paper seems to make sense.
News of this supposed Marvel multiplayer comes from Nick Baker, an industry insider who has shared specific information in the past. In the last episode of The XboxEra Podcast, which Baker is co-hosting, he explained that a single source told him that a Marvel multiplayer title was in development. Baker pointed out that there were additional details about the game that he was not free to share, but said he believed the project as a whole, if real, would be exclusive to PlayStation. 5.
Adding his own guesswork to the mix, Baker theorized that Insomniac Games could once again be the studio in question working on this Marvel project. While Insomniac is already very busy developing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Wolverine, Baker seems to have more information about the project than he has publicly revealed, which makes him believe it’s the studio. who might make the game. However, he made sure to clarify that this is only his best guess as to who might develop it.
Overall, seeing Marvel Games start dipping its toes into the multiplayer realm would make some sense. While Marvel has continued to ramp up its efforts in the video game space over the past two years, it has mostly focused on collaborating with studios for solo projects. In turn, Marvel has also started to expand the number of genres it seeks to explore, which is perhaps more easily seen with the upcoming 2K release of Marvel’s Midnight Suns. With that in mind, it stands to reason that Marvel Games would want to start exploring the multiplayer space at some point. And since the company already has such a good relationship with Sony, making such a game exclusive to the PS5 wouldn’t be a huge shock either.
