Nuts are a delicious snack and a great source of protein. Studies have shown that some varieties, like nuts, can even add years to your life. But before you get yourself some mixed nuts in the hopes of living longer, know that there are a few brands to be wary of right now. The United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) just announced that nuts sold at Amazon, HEB and other major retailers have been recalled due to potential foreign material floating in some of the bags. Read on to find out which nuts you should toss out of your pantry.

SunTree Snack Foods, based in Phoenix, Arizona, produces several popular brands of nuts that are sold in supermarkets and online retailers. The company makes branded nuts for Amazon, sold under the Happy Belly name; Boxed, sold under the Prince & Spring brand; and branded products for the southern supermarket chains Harris Teeter and HEB.

On September 24, SunTree Snack Foods voluntarily recalled many different products that it sells to these retailers after a disturbing sighting from a customer. The company is now pulling trail mixes, bags of cashews and other products following a customer complaint.

Certain lots of Prince & Spring Mountain trail mix, lightly salted Happy Belly cashew halves and pieces, Happy Belly salted cashew halves and pieces, HEB 100 calorie packs, lightly salted toasted cashew halves and pieces, Harris Teeter Tropical Trail Mix, Lightly Salted Roasted Harris Teeter Cashew halves and pieces and Harris Teeter roasted and salted cashew halves and pieces are all affected.

If you want to know if your specific bag of nuts is the issue, the full list of recalled packages (with lot codes, UPC numbers, and expiration dates) is available on the FDA website.

SunTree says the recall was issued after a customer alerted them to pieces of glass found in their bag. They believe the issue is related to specific lots of cashews, so the recall includes all products containing these nuts.

“While our investigation is ongoing, we believe the source of the glass is from the cashews which were a common ingredient in the products subject to this recall,” the company said in a statement regarding the recall. “SunTree Snack Foods, LLC is taking this step out of caution.”

It is not known how the glass ended up in the packaging, but luckily, according to SunTree, no one was harmed by the products in question.

This is the second HEB brand food to be recalled in the past two weeks due to potential foreign matter. On September 14, the FDA announced that certain lots of HEB Jumbo Stuffed Shells have been recalled after the company received several complaints from customers that the frozen pasta may contain lumps of metal.

The 22 oz. affected shell packages contain item number 796702, UPC number 041220771110, lot code 2 1208, and an expiration date of 07/27/22. The company is urging customers to throw the frozen food away or return it to an HEB store for a refund.

If you have any questions regarding the recalled shells or recalled nuts sold at HEB, you can contact their customer service on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. CST at 1-855-432-4438.
