A 22-year-old man has died following an abnormal drink-related accident.

He drank a 1.5-liter bottle of Coca-Cola to hydrate himself due to the hot weather and had a fatal gas build-up, the New York Post said.

About six hours after ingesting this massive amount of soda, he experienced symptoms such as stomach swelling and severe pain and was rushed to a hospital in Beijing.

Although the man had no underlying health issues, doctors found he had a high heart rate, rapid breathing, and low blood pressure. A CT scan then determined atypical levels both in her intestinal walls and in the portal vein that supplies blood to the liver.

“This, in turn, would have caused him hepatic ischemia, also known as ‘shock liver’, which is caused by a lack of oxygen in the organ,” notes the New York Post.

Staff attempted to remedy the problem by releasing gases from the digestive system and administering medication, but were unsuccessful and the man died 18 hours later.

According to Professor Nathan Davies, a biochemist at University College London, the official cause of death is unknown. Still, it is highly unlikely that this is due to an overdose of Coca-Cola.

He suggests the man could have died from a bacterial infection instead.

“These bacteria could have formed a pocket of gas in the intestinal wall, which then seeped into other parts of the body, such as the portal vein,” he told the New York Post.

Further research will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
