Diablo 2: Resurrected players still can’t access some of their characters

Diablo 2: Resurrected launched last week, allowing players to dive into a remaster of Blizzard’s hellish action RPG. Sadly, “hell” seems appropriate in more than one way, as players are still struggling with launch bugs. While the developers have released a number of fixes over the weekend, some players are still experiencing a “lockout” meaning they can’t play with certain characters because the game thinks they are. already used.

First up, the good news: Saturday’s 9.24 patch fixed a number of crashes and progression issues. The developers addressed one crash caused by “audio issues” and one caused by using a controller on a PC.

They also “fixed the saves for offline characters who shared the same names as their online characters,” as giving your characters the same names would disrupt the game and muddy the offline progress.

Unfortunately, a few pesky characters always cause problems. Character locking, or “lockout”, has been a constant problem since the launch of the remaster. While trying to enter Diablo 2, some players will get an error message telling them that their character is already on a server, so they cannot use them.

On Sunday, the developers took Resurrected offline to implement a fix for character locking, but that doesn’t seem to have worked. Once the maintenance is complete, Blizzard support tweeted: “We are aware that some characters get stuck in closed games. We are working to bring these characters back to a playable state as soon as possible.”

There is no update on when this issue is resolved. This Twitter thread is full of players saying they still can’t get into the game, and the Blizzard forum thread has thousands of posts from even more frustrated people.

A few also report characters missing from maintenance, but a number of players have responded to these threads saying their characters have started returning. It just seems like a waiting game at the moment.

While the character issues seem to be the worst, Blizzard is certainly not immune to other issues either. The bug reports section of the forum receives a new message every minute or so, with some of the more common complaints focused on minimap bugs.

Of course, this isn’t Blizzard’s worst news of late. Parent company Activision Blizzard continues to see the fallout from its ongoing lawsuit for alleged sexual harassment and discrimination within the company. The state agency that prosecuted them has since claimed that ActiBliz suppressed evidence and shredded documents relating to the case, and that the company is also under investigation by the US government.
