Sunday, the Rams put a cute little cry on Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 34-24. Los Angeles quarterback Matthew Stafford could get most of his teaPraise me for the win, but DeSean Jackson had a great game on his own – and not just that, he set a record in the process.
Jackson racked up 120 yards on just three catches in the game. Stafford hit Jackson on a 75-yard touchdown reception less than a minute into the second half, and the 34-year-old wide receiver gave the Tampa high school the BBQ chicken treatment on the play.
This TD for Jackson was the ninth for 75 yards or so in his career, and it ties him the most in NFL history with Hall of Famer Lance Alworth. The touchdown also marks the 33rd of Jackson’s career by at least 50 yards, bringing him within 3 of the GOAT, Jerry Rice. Jackson is already ahead of legends like Randy Moss and Terrell Owens in this category. Being mentioned among these names says a lot about Jackson’s abilities, especially since he’s under six feet tall.

Jackson won’t be part of the GOAT conversation at his post like Moss, Owens, or Rice, but when it comes to deep threats, you can’t deny his claim as one of the deadliest receivers the NFL has ever seen. . And it’s not just in his day, or the past 20 years. Jackson is an all-time great deep catcher.
What makes DeSean’s feat even better is that even at 34, he still beats the speed of defensive backs. At 5’10, he’s never been able to beat guys by being more physical. Since the day Jackson entered the league, it’s been top speed for him. All those years Jackson spent in the NFC East, I’ve seen him roast the Cowboys more times than I remember. Although Jackson had a moment against the Cowboys in 2008 which I’m sure he would like to resume.
But I feel bad for most of the cornerbacks guarding Jackson because once they’re lined up you know it’s pretty much a done deal. He lines up in the lunge or out, and you know he’s probably taking a starting route, but he’s still beating defense. And Jackson is a much better road racer than you might think.
The way this Rams offense looks at three games in the season, it’s safe to say Jackson will have a few more chances to catch Rice for the all-time header in receptions over 50 touchdown yards. Rice still holds so many records I’m sure he won’t mind putting this one back at some point.
