Nigel Thornberry, patriarch of the eponymous wild Thornberrys, is one of the strangest characters in Nickelodeon Star Brawl. Earlier today, the developers behind this cartoonish platform fighter released a breakdown of the Nature Documentary filmmaker’s movement set, which includes a massive tribute to the undisputed king of the genre, Super Smash Bros.

Nickelodeon Star Brawl wears his influences on his sleeve. Not only does it harness the power of fanservice using popular memes engendered by the various animated properties of Nickelodeon, but it does so with a combat system that is very clearly built at the top the foundations of the genre Super Smash Bros. First established in 1999. And while it’s hard to avoid comparisons when every major mechanic can be traced back to a single franchise, there are parts of the game that have obvious 1: 1 analogies.

Case in point: Nigel Thornberry uses a move which is essentially Jigglypuff’s infamous resting attack. If the timestamp below does not work, the technique in question is demonstrated around 3.30am.

“[Nigel] strikes opponents with insane force, often finishing them off on the spot, ”said community manager Thaddeus Crews, explaining the attack. “Be careful, this movement has a small hitbox and a long [recovery], which makes him quite vulnerable if he misses his shot.

Unfortunately, I don’t see Nigel’s film being as characteristic as his Super Smash Bros. counterpart.

Much of Jigglypuff’s strength in a game like Super Smash Bros. Melee is derived from the Pokémon’s ability to outsmart its opponents by floating around the stage and carrying out lightning attacks. Its unique movement options are the perfect complement to rest, which must be positioned just right to maximize its efficiency. To concern all Melee meet with Smash god Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma and you will see what I mean.

Nigel, on the other hand, is slow and heavy. Not only is this evident from the Nickelodeon Star Brawl gameplay we’ve seen so far, but Crews also makes sure to point this out at the start of today’s demo. Unless there are other differences between the two moves that the developers haven’t shared yet, I don’t think Nigel has the movement options to get the most out of his Rest-type attack. . I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how things turn out in competition.

Nickelodeon Star Brawl arrives on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, Switch, and PC this fall. For more in-depth gameplay, be sure to check out the previous breakdowns of Danny Phantom, Helga Pataki, and Michelangelo on the game’s official YouTube channel.
