Saints – Giants injury report Wednesday: Will Clapp is back

The New Orleans Saints are set to host their first real home game this weekend by hosting the New York Giants at the Caesars Superdome. Upon their return home, it looks like the key players remain healthy and returned to the lineup last week, even though they will potentially be missing two very important pieces of the offensive line.

Saints of New Orleans

A short list for New Orleans but two key absences on the offensive line will be something to watch against a talented defensive line from the Giants. Erik McCoy continues to remain DNP as he has been in recent weeks. Interestingly, the Saints never put him in the injured reserve, even though he looks set to miss his third game. Maybe there was or maybe still a hope that he could come back after missing just two, but that seems unlikely.

Terron Armstead injured his elbow in the Week 3 win over the New England Patriots after coming under friendly fire from Tony Jones Jr.’s helmet He is expected to miss the next three to six weeks according to reports. In his place, James Hurst will start on the left tackle.

In place of McCoy should continue to be Cesar Ruiz. But good news for the Saints to see Will Clapp in training again. Clapp may be in training for 21 days before the Saints must make a decision on his return to the native roster. The next step in his process has therefore begun. Expect Ruiz to continue filling in the center even with Clapp’s practice.

Marshon Lattimore played last weekend but is still recovering from thumb surgery. That hasn’t stopped him from being a full participant in training this week after a good start to the season.

Jameis Winston awkwardly fell on a Matthew Judon sack last weekend. He came with a little limp afterwards, but finished the game. Since there was a noticeable lameness, the Saints likely used caution to have him checked out, thus bringing him on the injury report even though he was a full participant. Shouldn’t be of concern unless he’s demoted at some point this week.

WR Tre’Quan Smith, K Wil Lutz, CB Ken Crawley and TE Nick Vannett are all eligible to return to the injured reserve but have yet to do so.

New York Giants

The Giants’ injury list is reminiscent of the Saints before their Week 2 game against the Carolina Panthers. As long as it was, this was an estimated entry list since Wednesday was just a walk through the team. The follow-up to Thursday’s injury report will be more informative.

The most notable estimated absences for New York are LB Blake Martinez and WRs Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton. Shepard and Slayton both suffer from hamstring injuries.

Martinez is more than appreciated as he was later transferred to the injured reserve after suffering an ACL tear ending the season. The WRs suffered their hamstring injuries in week three. These are big hits for the Giants on both sides of the ball.

Look for Martinez’s absence to factor in Alvin Kamara’s play, as he’s the Giants’ most talented off-ball linebacker. Young LB Tae Crowder will likely be in the role. Bad direction and correspondence with Karama will present a challenge for him. As will his new role of lining up defense and shooting under the pressure of what will sure be an incredibly loud home crowd that hasn’t seen numbers at full capacity since January 2020. It won’t be an easy task. for the second-year Mr. Irrelevant (last pick in the 2020 NFL Draft).

If either or both WRs miss this game, the Saints can grab Kenny Golladay in the passing game with Marshon Lattimore and potential Bracket covers.

However, even Golladay himself carries an estimated limited designation with a hip injury. Join seven other Giants, including star RB Saquon Barkley and a big part of the defense with DB Logan Ryan.

Thursday’s report is expected to carry the actual injury designations for the Giants and hopefully continue to do well for the Saints.
