During Search On 2021, Google today announced new features aimed at tackling the effects of climate change. For governments, Google has announced that it will expand its tree canopy information to more than 100 cities around the world next year, which will help them prioritize areas that need shade the most. For users, Google is launching a forest fire layer in Google Maps, which provides users with up-to-date information about nearby fires in the event of an emergency. The Google Maps Wildfire layer is rolling out globally this week on Android with version 11.0.1 of the Maps app. The update not only brings the wildfire layer to areas where this information is available, but it also contains a new search widget that will help you find nearby places quickly.
An APK teardown can often predict features that might arrive in a future update of an app, but it’s possible that one of the features we mention here may not in a future release. Indeed, these features are currently not implemented in the live version and can be checked out at any time by the developers in a future version.
Google Maps app version 11.0.1 contains code for a fully functional search widget, although the widget is not yet accessible to users. We do know what the widget will look like though, as a preview has been included in the app’s resources. It looks a lot like the search widget that Google Maps for iOS added at the start of last month. The arrival of the search widget on Android is a bit late, but it follows the stable release of Android 12 next week.
On Pixel devices running Android 12, the Maps search widget will support dynamic colors. On devices running Android 11, however, the widget will likely use blue accent colors like other Google widgets.
