Dowd, Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-Independent-turned-Democrat, often shares his anti-GOP views on Twitter. In May, Dowd had tweeted more than 180,000 times, but on Wednesday his account shows he has fewer than 5,000 tweets.

According to records, between May 28 and July 2 of this year, hundreds of thousands of tweets were deleted.
Dowd’s critics were not surprised as Dowd has been caught up in several controversies over his tweets.
As recently as February, Dowd sparked an uproar by tweeting an image of a fatal pile-up on the Texas freeway in an attempt to mock former President Donald Trump’s impeachment defense team. .
“I saw this photo in the news today. I didn’t read the story. Was that photo one of the assets [sic] presentation of the impeachment defense team? “asked Dowd. He then deleted the tweet.
Meanwhile, Twitter users reposted old screenshots of Dowd’s now-deleted tweets, including attacks on Republican New York Rep. Elise Stefanik and the defense of former Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. .

Before launching his campaign, Dowd wrote a column in 2018 suggesting that white Christian men like him are stepping back from politics and allowing women and people of color to lead.
“I would humbly suggest that as white Christian men we take it upon ourselves to step back and give more people who are unlike us access to the levers of power,” he wrote, adding, “As a white male Christian in America, I am part of a declining subset that has held the levers of power politically and economically in almost every area throughout the history of the United States.”
Dowd also said this year that the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill was worse than the September 11 terrorist attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 Americans.
