Thursday’s “First Call” updates us on some new homes for a few older Steelers. The Green Bay Packers have injury issues to watch out for as they head into their game against the Steelers. And Ravens head coach John Harbaugh talks about Chuck Noll as his team moves closer to a Steelers record.
Ravens break a record?
The Baltimore Ravens are on track to equal a longtime Pittsburgh Steelers record.
The Ravens have run at least 100 team yards in every game for 42 straight weeks. According to Steelers Depot research, the Steelers currently hold this record with 43 games, from December 8, 1974 to December 12, 1977.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh was asked about the potential accomplishment on Wednesday.
“I remember I was a Browns fan, and we never beat them,” Harbaugh said. “I remember that. It probably had to do with the rush for all these sites. I was a kid. So I remember Franco Harris and [former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach] Chuck Noll. I really admire Chuck Noll. I really have a lot of respect for him. I read a lot of things he said. So, of course, it’s something that matters. It’s sort of not really at the forefront of our thinking right now, but it’s something, for sure. “
The Ravens will try to level that score Sunday against the Denver Broncos. The Denver defense allowed just 26 points in three games, giving up just 59.3 rushing yards per game. However, their opponents (Giants, Jaguars and Jets) have a total of 0-9.
Packer issues
Like the Steelers, the Green Bay Packers grapple with injury issues as the two teams prepare for their clash at Lambeau Field.
Left tackle Elgton Jenkins and wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling missed Wednesday’s practice and was listed on the initial injury report as “did not participate”.
Via PackersWire.com, coach Matt LaFleur said Jenkins and Valdes-Scantling will both need the full week to determine their playing status in Week 4.
“I would say it will take all week to determine whether or not he will be available,” LaFleur said of Jenkins.
Valdes-Scantling is in the “same boat” according to LaFleur.
Wright’s Stuff
Former Steelers kicker Matthew Wright has a new job. He will kick Thursday night for the Jacksonville Jaguars against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Wright will replace struggling kicker Josh Lambo. He missed training on Tuesday and Wednesday for undisclosed reasons and was listed on the match report as “unrelated to injury”.
Lambo has missed five kicks in three games this season, including three field goals and two extra points. He was sidelined for 12 games last year with a hip injury that required surgery, but said ahead of Week 1 his confidence “is higher than ever” despite missed kicks at training camp and in the preseason.
Wright played three games for the Steelers last season and scored all three baskets and seven extra runs he attempted.
Wright signed a forward contract with Detroit in January and spent the offseason and two weeks of training camp with the Lions. Detroit relinquished it on August 10.
I love LA
It didn’t take long for former Steelers outside linebacker Jamir Jones to find work. He was picked up by the Los Angeles Rams on waiver.
The Steelers took out the pass thrower after Game 3 of the NFL season. It looks like his shots will be absorbed by Derrek Tuszka.
This isn’t the first time a former Steelers outside linebacker has been selected by another team this year. The New York Giants also landed sixth-round pick Quincy Roche, which was cut just before the NFL rosters were reduced to 53 players.
Jones has had a quarterback hit and three tackles this season.
