Since Stadia launched in late 2019, the Android app has lagged the furthest behind in its gameplay, simply because it didn’t have the ability to talk with friends and strangers through voice and group chat. Today that has changed.
While Stadia games have been playable on Android phones since the service launched in 2019 – but only on Pixel phones, at this time – it’s sadly the worst place to enjoy Stadia, due to missing features like chat. voice and live broadcast. This was especially the case with 2020 being the kind of year where we were looking for new ways to stay in touch with our friends and family online rather than in person.
For most of Stadia’s first year of existence, the Android app featured a banner that read “The Holidays are coming to the app soon.” All the while, our APK Insight team has been following the development of group chat closely since May 2020, eagerly anticipating its arrival with each further step forward.
Worse yet, a more complete Stadia app, with group chat and streaming, launched last year for iOS via the web browser. When this mobile web app was made available to Android gamers, it offered a surprisingly better experience in some ways than the native Android app.
As spotted by Gem bear set, the Stadia Android application now has full support for group chat, including the ability to party, invite others to it, text chat, and even share a link to your current group through another app. The addition less than a day after Stadia players began spotting the option of connecting their headphones for use with Stake voice chat.
Most importantly, you can stay in the group chat while doing other things on your phone. Stadia will place a “Group Voice Chat” notification in your system tray, with quick access to return to group view and mute your microphone. This means that you can talk to your friends through Stadia whether or not you are playing something. For example, if your Destiny 2 teammates send you a party invite while you’re racing, you can quickly join in to let them know what’s going on.
It’s taken far too long to get here, but Stadia on Android has finally taken a big step towards realizing the dream of a full console gaming experience – which must include social features – anywhere you have an internet connection.
