Hosts of “The View” aren’t happy with LeBron James this week after the NBA star said he didn’t feel responsible for telling fans to get the COVID shot. For women, encouraging public health and safety measures is an inherent responsibility for anyone with a platform as massive as James.
The panel kicked off the show with this discussion on Thursday, showing an excerpt from one of James’ recent press conferences. Discussing NBA vaccination mandates, James admitted that he was initially skeptical of COVID vaccines, but did his own research and decided he and his family should get vaccinated. That said, he didn’t think the move was a decision he should be encouraging fans to make.
“But when it comes to speaking on behalf of everyone and their individualities, the things that they want to do, I don’t feel like it’s my – it’s not my job,” James said.
To that, host Whoopi Goldberg somewhat agreed – but alone somewhat.
“It’s not your job to tell people what to do, but you can suggest! Said Whoopi. “You understand that no one pushed a second head or a second tail when they received the blow. I mean, I don’t know why that would be difficult for people.
As the discussion continued, the hosts of “The View” all pretty much agreed with Whoopi’s feelings. Host Ana Navarro noted that people like James – or herself and her co-hosts, or really anyone with a platform – undeniably have certain privileges that come with that platform and bear the responsibility of messages they send.
Sunny Hostin added that she was “really deeply disappointed” with the basketball star.
“I’m trying to get back to the law, you know? And I think in America there is so much talk of personal freedoms because that is really the foundation of our country. But what we need to understand is that as citizens we prioritize individual freedom but we do not have the right to harm our colleagues and the families of our colleagues, ”said Hostin. “With this individual freedom comes this great responsibility. Your right, LeBron, to a healthy life is no greater than another person’s right to a healthy life, and that’s really the message that I think needs to get out.
