Saint Barnabas Medical Center received a donation of $ 100 million from the Cooperman Family Foundation, the largest amount ever given to the hospital.
RWJBarnabas Health, the hospital’s parent network, said it would rename the Livingston facility to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in honor of the gift.
“It reflects and is very meaningful to me, and gratifying, that they believe in the mission we pursue at the medical center,” Barry H. Ostrowsky, President and CEO of RWJBarnabas Health, told NJ Advance Media. “I don’t think anyone does this kind of philanthropy unless they are truly convinced of an institution’s vision and goals. “
Leon and Toby Cooperman, of Short Hills, have made numerous donations to the hospital over the years, among other philanthropic initiatives. In 2014, they made a gift of $ 25 million to the establishment.
However, the $ 100 million donation was an “exaggerated” generosity, Ostrowsky said.
Leon Cooperman, 78, said the money would be wasted if he used it to buy goods or other things. He considers investing in the medical center and community health care money well spent, he added.
He hopes his donation will be recycled in society “to improve the human condition”.
“And that’s what we decided to do,” Cooperman told NJ Advance Media.
The Coopermans’ philanthropy is far-reaching.
“So it is health care, education, young people from disadvantaged neighborhoods who have the opportunity they deserve,” he said. “Saint Barnabé is a large medical center. In a typical year, it serves 400,000 patients. We believe everyone deserves quality health care.
