Justin Thomas hijacked Jim “Bones” Mackay from his full-time job as a broadcaster to become his full-time junior.

The sixth world player who won the players’ championship in March and was a member of the winning U.S. Ryder Cup has parted ways with longtime caddy Jimmy Johnson, who has been with Thomas since turning pro in 2015.

Mackay will still work for Golf Channel on a limited basis.

“It came out of left field very recently,” Mackay told Golf Channel. “I have immense respect for him as a person and a player. It was an amazing call and I said yes.

“I love being a caddy and loved my role with NBC / Golf Channel, but it’s Justin Thomas.”

Mackay replaced Johnson twice while ill last year, including winning the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and then the following week at the PGA Championship.

Mackay caddied for Phil Mickelson for 25 years until the summer of 2017 before working for NBC / Golf Channel as a reporter on the course.

Johnson earlier this year was inducted into the Caddy Hall of Fame at the BMW Championship. Before Thomas he worked for Steve Stricker and Nick Price and previously played professionally on the South African tour.
