Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lambasted Sen. Joe Manchin’s maximum price for the Democrats’ budget reconciliation bill, which Manchin said is expected to cap at $ 1.5 trillion instead of the $ 3.5 trillion proposed by the most Democrats.
“Uh, for a year? Ocasio-Cortez laughed at him, laughing when asked about Manchin’s frontline number. The New York Democrat argued that there were “a lot of games played with that number” and pointed out that over 10 years, $ 3.5 trillion equals $ 350 billion a year.

“You know, most of the senators who just a few weeks ago authorized a budget authorization of $ 730 billion for one year,” Ocasio-Cortez added. “So why do we have to cut something of this size in half? So if it’s really the deficit, then maybe we’re going to look for our defense spending and find our savings there instead of tackling the people’s daycare. “
Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, is a big hurdle for Democrats to push through the massive $ 3.5 trillion bill. The legislation faces unanimous Republican opposition, which means Democrats will once again be forced to use the budget reconciliation process to attempt to pass the bill with only a simple majority.
But with an equally divided Senate, Democrats cannot afford any defection from the party if the bill passes. Manchin and Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema have both raised concerns about the bill’s price, sparking friction within a party that has largely otherwise coalesced around the package.

The expansion of Medicare legislation is one of the biggest issues for Manchin, who argued the program should be stabilized before expanding it.
“We have to stabilize it,” he told reporters on Friday. “By 2026, you understand, the trust fund will be insolvent.”
