NFL rumors: Eagles change business pursuit of Deshaun Watson, compared

We’re only three weeks away from the start of the 2021 NFL regular season, but already the trade winds are blowing around the most talked about player in the league… who isn’t even playing.

Deshaun Watson, the Houston Texans quarterback who still faces more than 20 allegations of sexual assault and harassment, is on the Texans roster but hasn’t played a wink, and unless something unexpected is probably not doing it this year.

The Eagles, following the Carson Wentz debacle, have emerged as one of the teams in the league with an interest in trading for Watson as the next QB franchise. He’s young, he’s part of the elite, and he wants to leave Houston, while the Eagles have a plethora of draft picks to trade. From a football perspective alone, this makes perfect sense. But at the moment, the prospect of football alone is not very important.

Now, as the buzz around Watson resumes with the trade deadline just over a month away, FOX Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer – one of the most knowledgeable about gossip in the world of football – rejects the idea of the Eagles still being in the Watson commercial race.

Glazer twice reported on Thursday night that the Eagles are not currently seeking a trade with Watson:

It’s good news.

Whether the Eagles can afford to acquire Watson (they probably can) is one thing; the question of whether they should is quite another. Even if the legal system ends up protecting Watson and serving what will likely be a relatively minor punishment from the NFL, the thought of adding someone who allegedly harassed and serialized women while in Houston didn’t not doing well with a good chunk of the Eagles fan base.

It’s unfortunate that the Eagles were even linked with Watson’s commercial run, given that their reported interest in the QB only emerged after the allegations were made against Watson.

And that the Eagles’ top decision-makers have given Watson “the green light” at one point or another, even if it turns out to be old news, is disappointing.

It doesn’t matter how Jalen Hurts plays, now or in October. There are many solutions for the future of the Eagles quarterback room – a different profession; an exchange in next year’s project; another year of Hurts while they wait for the right guy – and none of them should include Watson.
