Harris office forced to control damage after student accuses Israel of “ethnic genocide”

Vice President Kamala Harris’s office is working to reassure pro-Israel Democrats after failing to fend off a student who accused Israel of “ethnic genocide.”

The controversy stems from an incident on Wednesday in which a student attending an event to promote the vote told Harris Israel he was committing “ethnic genocide” in Palestine and argued that the United States was ignoring the protests despite promoting the power of democracy.

KAMALA HARRIS APPLAUSES STUDENT WHO ACCUSED ISRAL OF “ETHNIC GENOCIDE”, FOR SAYING “YOUR TRUTH”

“Your voice, your perspective, your experience, your truth cannot be suppressed and must be heard,” Harris told the student.

The remarks prompted an immediate reaction from the Israeli press, which ran headlines such as “Kamala Harris Does Not Reject US Students’ Claim of ‘Ethnic Genocide’ Against Israel.”

Harris staff have worked behind the scenes with pro-Israel groups and lawmakers on damage limitation, with an executive reaching out to the Democratic majority for Israel to reaffirm the vice president’s commitment to the country.

“We are delighted that Senior Vice President Harris is contacting us today to confirm what we already know: his ‘commitment to Israel’s security is unwavering,'” said Mark Mellman, group chairman.

A senior adviser also contacted Representative Ted Deutch, a Democrat from Florida who co-chairs the bipartisan task force on anti-Semitism, according to Politico.

Deutch’s office did not respond to a Politico request for comment on the matter, but a source told the outlet that it was “fair to say that the group of House Democrats who care a lot about this l ‘noticed and talked about it “. The same source said Harris’s office also contacted Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt on Thursday.

Mellman said senior Harris executives reassured his organization that Harris “strongly disagreed with student George Mason’s characterization of Israel.”

“The Biden-Harris administration, as well as President Biden and Vice President Harris personally, have exemplary pro-Israel records, for which we are extremely grateful,” Mellman said.
