Two of the Giants’ worst records collided to give Isaiah Wilson a third chance.
Wilson trained with the rest of the Giants’ offensive linemen on Thursday for the first time since signing with the practice squad. The struggling 2020 first-round pick – who has been shut down several times – has been out of the NFL since March, when he was cut by the Dolphins just three days after acquiring him via trading from the Titans.
Giants coach Joe Judge counts Dolphins coach Brian Flores among his close friends.
“It’s a little league and there are very few secrets in this league when it comes to the players, the coaches or anything,” Judge said. “We all have friends and contacts on each team. We do our due diligence with every player and every coach we bring here. This would be no exception.
Except for the Giants’ due diligence record over the past five years – before the arrival of general manager David Gettleman and judge – is as poor as their many failed attempts to mend a broken offensive line. The signing “shows you how desperate they are right now,” an NFL source told The Post.
The Giants hired kicker Josh Brown after his domestic violence incident, ignored well-known red flags on first-round cornerback DeAndre Baker’s engagement level in 2019, and were surprised when he was arrested for armed robbery and hung on to cornerback Sam Beal this season after his arrest on a firearms charge. But they traded Odell Beckham, who has no known legal issues as Gettleman considered him locker room cancer.
Baker and Wilson were teammates in Georgia, where the football coach (Kirby Smart) is another friend of Judge. The Giants are hardly alone in the multi-chance NFL, as the mighty Buccaneers (Antonio Brown, Richard Sherman) and Chiefs (Tyreek Hill, Frank Clark and Josh Gordon) are filled with players with checkered pasts.
“I will not go into details in terms of context [check]”said the judge.” Usually everyone is going to start here with a clean slate and gain an opportunity to be part of this team. It all comes down to what they do when they are here: how they get along. behave, how they behave in class, how they behave outside our organization. “
The Giants’ offensive line is in shambles as three-fifths of the starters scheduled for Sunday are in their first month with the team. They are about to start their fourth left keeper in as many games as Ben Bredeson (hand) risks being sidelined.
The unmistakably talented Wilson, who didn’t sign after a try with the Colts last week, isn’t ready to play right away – the 330-pound list on the list looks very generous – but the Giants see a low risk reward and high potential solution to guard or right tackle. He returns to a support system after growing up in New York City and performing at Brooklyn’s Poly Prep.
Wilson only played one game as a rookie, when his growing problems off the field with the Titans reportedly included two unexcused absences where he was later found partying, as well as an arrest under the threat of a weapon after a high-speed police chase ended with the recovery of drugs from his wrecked car.
The judge values ”the love of football” and Wilson has been questioned on several occasions.
“He’s going to have the opportunity to prove it here,” he said.
