After nearly a month in hospital, Brazilian football icon Pelé is back home after having a tumor removed.

Pele, 80, posted on Instagram on Thursday that he was released from hospital after surgery to remove a tumor from his colon and multiple stays in intensive care.

“It’s true that I can’t jump anymore, but in the last few days I have hit the air more times than usual,” he wrote, in part. “I am so happy to be back home. I would like to thank the entire team at Albert Einstein Hospital, who made my stay pleasant, with a human and very affectionate welcome. Thank you also to all of you, who from afar fill my life with so many messages of love.

Pele underwent surgery in Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 4 to remove the tumor from the right side of his colon, something he said was found during routine exams he was unable to surrender during the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned to the intensive care unit a few weeks after his operation after facing “brief respiratory instability”.

Since then, however, Pele has provided several social media updates about his recovery – including a video of him throwing a soccer ball with a physiotherapist.

Pelé will continue his chemotherapy treatment, the hospital announced via The Associated Press.

The tumor is only Pelé’s latest health problem in recent years, following kidney and prostate problems and a failed hip replacement.

Pelé helped Brazil win three World Cup titles in 1958, 1962 and 1970, making him the only male player to win the event three times. He is still Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 77 goals.
