Square Enix wrapped up their live show at TGS, which was a pretty solid performance overall. He also unveiled a new surprise title called Encounters in Dungeons, which is directed by Hiroyuki Ito and will feature the ATB (Active Time Battle) system he pioneered for the Final Fantasy series. It’s also coming very soon, with an October 14 release date for Switch eShop.
As you can see from the trailer, this is a minimalist, grid-based approach to dungeon exploration. You explore and have to watch out for hex numbers, with trial and error likely to be essential in clearing every dungeon. it’s not just battles that trigger events, as the official website says every action and pickup – like visiting stores etc. – will also be an “event” on the map.
Square Enix also wishes to highlight the big names who are at the origin of the project:
Producer: Hiroaki Kato
Director: Hiroyuki Ito
Character design: Ryoma Ito
Music: Nobuo Uematsu
It certainly sounds like an interesting take on the genre – let us know what you think, as always, in the comments.
