FLORHAM PARK, NJ – New York Jets wide receiver Denzel Mims, who has been a good scratch in the last two games after mysteriously lowering the depth draw in the preseason, will be active Sunday.
With five healthy receivers, the Jets look to the 2020 second-round pick, whose absence from the roster has drawn criticism from fans and the media.
Circumstances have changed this week as Elijah Moore and Jeff Smith were both excluded with concussions for Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans. Moore was injured last week; Smith was injured in a car crash on his way to the Jets facility Wednesday morning.
Now Mims has his chance.
“He’s going to have an opportunity,” coach Robert Saleh said on Friday. “I hope he takes advantage of it. We expect him to. He has racked up a third straight week of excellent training. He feels really comfortable with attacking, and we are delighted. to see him get his op. “
The Jets (0-3) will have a different look at the receiver. Jamison Crowder, recovering from a groin injury, is set to make his season debut. Crowder and Braxton Berrios will be the receivers of the slots, with Corey Davis, Keelan Cole and Mims on the outside.
Mims or Cole will replace Moore as one of the outside starters, against Davis.
Mims played in the opener as a replacement for injured Cole, but he only got three offensive snaps. One of them was a 40-yard reception at the end of their loss to the Carolina Panthers.
He was benched for the next two games, Saleh said, as he doesn’t play against special teams and was always trying to master the receiver’s X and Z positions – prerequisites for a backup role. Meanwhile, the offense got off to a historic bad start, producing just 20 points in three games, which only fueled more criticism.
Saleh said Mims is now comfortable with both receiver positions.
“You see the speed and the athleticism he has,” Saleh said. “It’s just a matter of giving him those opportunities and taking him until Sunday and running with his teammates and being the guy we expect him to be.”
Mims has struggled with adversity since writing. He missed the first half of his rookie season with a serious hamstring injury, then missed most of the 2021 offseason with a serious bout with food poisoning that caused him to lose 15 pounds.
When he played, he showed promise. The Mims sent 23 receptions for 357 yards – an average of 15.5 yards per catch – in nine games last season.
In injury news, safety Marcus Maye (sprained ankle) will miss two games, Saleh said. They hope to see him again after their recess on Oct. 24 against the New England Patriots.
